Liquor Me Up Fridays: Wine Storage

Wine and the holidays are synonymous. We drink it, we gift it, some even admit to re-gifting it. While we don’t consider ourselves above any bottle of wine, it would be nice to know how to properly store those uber-nice bottles that circle around our circle of friends come the holiday season.

Here are a few tips that we scrounged up:

*Store your wine horizontally: While all wine bottles come with a pocket of air to help it age correctly, you want to make sure no excess air leaks in. Therefore the cork should always be saturated to keep it from cracking or shrinking, thus letting in more air.

*Store wine in consistent and cool temperature: Anywhere between 40 and 65 degrees tends to do the trick, hence most opt for a wine cellar to keep these cooler temperatures year round. Storing wine in a warm environment will cause it to age too quickly while quick drastic temperature changes will cause the cork to crack, thus letting in air (see above).

*Refrain from light exposure: Too much exposure to UV rays will cause the wine to develop an unpleasant aroma.

*Refrain from jostling the bottles: The more the bottles are handled, the more their sediments are moved, resulting in a disrupted aging process. Let the bottle sit and age gracefully until you are ready to open that cork.
